About Us.
We founded Teach Sri Lanka in 2012 with the sole purpose to promote and enable the education of ALL Sri Lankan children regardless of their gender, creed, socio economic background or any other bias. Our sincere belief is that education is one of the most empowering tools a child can have and is a crucial determinant of their future success. We have seen first hand the transformative potential and its ability to shatter the glass ceiling and lift people out of poverty.
Teach Sri Lanka seeks to collaborate and share resources with select organisations to enable the successful implementation of various educational projects. Past collaborations have included working closely with the Pattakanus Foundation and the Kosala Dullewa Foundation. The former of which has been involved in Humanitarian work in the country and has spanned three generations while the latter specialises in working with children with special needs. We have also recently partnered with Ocean Stars a charity that was set up after the Tsunami in 2004 and who’s goals are closely aligned to Teach Sri Lanka.
WHY WE STARTED TEACH SRI LANKA?
Sri Lanka is a country which has been devastated by civil war. Spanning over two decades it has had a generational impact on the education of our populous. The war ended in 2009 but the impact is still felt by many with many Sri Lankans still affected by poverty, famine, disease and homelessness. The wounds can often be deep and slow to heal with children being especially vulnerable in the aftermath of the war.
Having been in education during the majority the civil war the Teach Sri Lanka founding committee understands more than most that a solid educational grounding can act as the cure to the ailments faced by the children who have been displaced by war. Its transformative potential and ability to lift people out of poverty is second to none. The committee hopes that this transformative potential will have wide reaching impact not just for the children impacted directly but for the country as a whole.
It is for this reason Teach’s focus is to help fund and promote various educational causes and schools. We at Teach feel incredibly privileged to have been afforded a first class education and we hope to give other Sri Lankans the opportunity to have the same.
If teach were to be encapsulated in a single quote it would be this one from Mother Teresa: “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”
